Who We Are
Jonathan Shaw was called to the Bar by Gray’s Inn and practised on the Midland & Oxford circuit from Birmingham specialising in corporate & commercial law and tax. In 1986 he re-located to Hong Kong where he had been offered a seat in the Attorney General’s Chambers prosecuting complex commercial crime for a single contract before practice at the Hong Kong Bar. In 1994 he achieved Merit in his Master’s in international tax law at London University achieving congratulations on his Dissertation on the US Arm’s Length Standard in Transfer Pricing.
Concerns over the 1997 handover of Hong Kong to China, led to Jonathan forming a trust corporation in Mauritius to take advantages of the very low tax there (3%) and its numerous international tax treaties. Advising HNWIs and ULTRAs on their international tax and trust issues, Jonathan was appointed by Credit Suisse to introduce them to the jurisdiction and established their subsidiary there, Hofmann Trust (later Clariden Leu Trust) which he, and his specialist team, administered for twenty years until the re-organisation of the Credit Suisse offshore subsidiaries, prior to the UBS merger.
Reluctant to retire completely from the law, International Law Office enables him to continue to be associated and involved with the international legal profession in real time.
Jonathan is a resident of Mauritius administering his trust corporation there, and also its sister trust company in Hong Kong, and specialises in advising HNW and ULTRA clients on their international tax planning and trust matters.
Jonathan, resident in Mauritius, spends half of the year on the Indian Ocean Island, and half in London.
